KYUKEI GOTO
鎌倉彫 KAMAKURA-BORI ARTIST
Born in Kamakura in 1972, he began studying under sculptor Hiroshi Kobatake in 1994. In 1998, he succeeded as the third-generation master of Kamakura-bori, Gotō Kyūkei, carrying on the tradition while pursuing new forms of contemporary expression.
His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including SICF #10 at Spiral Hall, Aoyama (2009); Archives at Shinwa Art Museum, Ginza (2009); The 1st Tobiselection at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum Gallery B (2012); and the solo exhibition Beyond the Carved Moment at the Gotō Kyūkei Gallery in Kamakura (2024).
In addition to exhibitions, he has undertaken significant commissions and restoration projects for temples, such as creating the shrine housing the principal image of Kannon at Ryūinan, Engakuji, and restoring the memorial tablets of Minamoto no Sanetomo, Hōjō Masako, and Ashikaga Takauji at Jufukuji.
